In Flanders vulnerable ecological communities are still regularly lost as a result of various disrupting factors.
Nevertheless space for nature is important. Larger areas of protected nature offer better resistance to disruptions and may be important for the continued survival of endangered species. Recent efforts are increasing the total area of protected nature in Flanders. Nature development is undertaken to improve environmental quality in protected regions. However, the biological measurement networks are still insufficiently developed to monitor changes to environmental quality well.
Other environmental disruptions such as pollution and invasive developments of exotic populations (‘foreign’ animals), also threaten natural biodiversity.
The Nature report (NARA) gives a biennial outline of the evolution of nature and nature policy. Indicators about biodiversity may be found at www.natuurindicatoren.be.
